Finding a Training Session

HOO Professional Development Training

As part of the Hands-On Optics program, educators and optics resource volunteers participate in professional development training together. This prepares them to introduce the optics modules successfully as well as to interact with each other and their communities in productive and synergistic ways.

Educators are trained not only in optics but also in successful partnership building with the volunteers. A manual for educators and optics resource volunteers is provided with best practices including the following themes:

  • Key Ideas About Partnerships
  • Partnership Strategies
  • Guidelines for Teachers and Optics Resource Volunteers
  • Involving Families, Community, and the School
  • Science Clubs, Special Events, and Other Neat Ideas

Another resource available to educators is Light: Stop Faking It! published by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). This 120-page book introduces the basic concepts of light and provides the background teachers cover during the HOO professional development training session.
