Hands-On Optics is a unique, national, inquiry-based informal science education program
for students in who have traditionally been under-represented in the field of optics and photonics.
The HOO program is built around six learning modules.
Each module features a series of eight to 12 fun and challenging activities designed
to get students interested in science, math, and technology through optics and photonics.
The program is targeted to middle-school where students’ long-term attitudes
about science and engineering are formed. However, program elements are adaptable and
can be used successfully with students as early as 4th grade and throughout high school.
Hands-On Optics pairs educators with optics resource volunteers from the academic
and corporate communities. The team works together to direct the program activities
and attends training sessions that are run by professional scientists.
Educators receive a complete kit of materials—all the equipment and supplies
they need to run the program with 20 to 30 students—a program manual and a listing
of ancillary web-based resources.
HOO was started through a grant from the National Science Foundation and is operated
today through a partnership including OSA, SPIE and NOAO.
The HOO program owes its success to the commitment of educators, science center
professionals, and optics resource volunteers across the country. To date, more than
7,000 students have experienced Hands-On Optics. The passion and enthusiasm of
the partnership between educators and volunteers drives the program’s success.
Corporations and educational institutions can help by providing optics volunteers or
sponsoring HOO kits for schools in your area. We encourage all interested individuals
and organizations to
and get involved.
