Educators and optics resource volunteers are partners in the HOO program—working
together as equal partners to develop their own program. Together they decide what
specific activities to do based and each partner’s interests and the student’s
needs. In this way teachers learn more about optics, and optics resource volunteers become
more familiar with students, schools, and effective instructional design.
The optics resource volunteer provides technical expertise and serves as a resource for
educators providing an interface with real-world activities and industry. They can tutor
students, present information during HOO sessions, judge contests, evaluate projects, and
work with the educator to structure the program.

Educators who are inspired by the HOO program experience can share their new knowledge
with colleagues and use their new skills in other setting—including classroom
activities. As optics resource volunteers learn more about teachers, kids, and schools’
needs, they become effective advocates for improving science and math education in general
and creating meaningful and lasting links between the school and the outside
community.
